Chapters

After training the participants are expected to:

Chapter 1: Understanding Aggression

• Know different definitions, categories and forms of aggression

• Know the prevalence of violence in different populations

• Know different explanations

Chapter 2: Violence risk and managing

• Know the concepts of violence, risk and risk assessment

• Know forms of structured clinical assessment tools

• Be able to participate in risk assessment

Chapter 3: Violence prevention

• Know different factors for violence prevention in hospital, individual and statistical factors

• Know the concepts of power and powerlessness

• Know the concepts of vulnerability and factors for vulnerability

• Know the concept of early recognition

Chapter 4: Pre-emptive communication

• Know theories of communication

• Know models of communication with patients

• Know strategies for communication

• Be able to use specific skills of non-verbal and verbal communication

Chapter 5: De-escalation

• Know theories of verbal and non-verbal de-escalation

• Be able to use specific verbal or non-verbal interventions in clinical practise

Chapter 6: Self-regulation

• Know the body’s physiology and activation when handling stressful situations

• Understand feelings and reactions’ impact to aggressive situations

• Know what might escalate or de-escalate situations

Chapter 7: Co-operation

• Know principles for managing situations

• Be able to plan ahead of situations

• Be able to use strategic placement to avoid damage or harm to staff

Chapter 8: Managing strategies during critical situations

• Know different means of coercion

• Know regulatory laws

• Know indications for physical coercion

• Be able to use physical restraints in practice

• Be able to maintain the patient’s autonomy and integrity

Chapter 9: Physical techniques

• Be able to use ethical principles while using physical restraints

• Be able to use techniques to maintain the safety of patient and staff

• Know the different dangers of using physical techniques

Chapter 10: Debrief and afterwork

• Know normal or possible reactions to stressful events

• Know how to use aggressive situations for learning and future prevention

• Be able to use different measures in the afterwork of situations
